Kawasaki J300 vs. the Yamaha TriCity
Apr 04, 2014 - 12:16 PM - by alcatraz
One of the newest entrants to the scooter market is the Yamaha Tricity, which stands apart from the pack because it has not 2, but 3 wheels. here I take a look at the Tricity in comparison to the Kawasaki J300 to see how they measure up.

2014 Kawasaki J300

Price: 4,399
Engine: 299cc, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, single cylinder
Power: 27.2bhp @ 7750 rpm
Torque: 21.2lb-ft @ 6250rpm
Weight: 191kg
Seat height: 775mm
Tank size: 13 liters

2014 Yamaha Tricity

Price: 4000
Engine: 125cc, four-stroke engine
Power: 10.9bhp
Torque: 10.9lb-ft
Weight: 152kg
Tank size: 6.6L

It seems that on almost all counts the Kawasaki J300 comes out on top of the Yamaha Trcity. Obviously, one of the main draws to the Tricity is the fact that it is a trike. There is a certain novelty to the idea of a trike. The Tricity is less powered than the J300, and has a tank size that is about half of what the J300 can hold. The price difference is there, but they are quite close together. I'd say that the J300 is a better scooter that has great value.

What do you guys think?

Is the Kawasaki J300 coming to North America?
Feb 07, 2014 - 10:29 AM - by alcatraz
As of right now there has been no offocial indication that the Kawasaki J300 maxi scooter is going to be coming to North America. This comes as a disappointment to many I'm sure. The absence of a maxi scooter option from Kawasaki means that buyers will be looking elsewhere, like in Honda dealerships where the new Forza can be found.

The Honda Forza is a 279 cc maxi scooter that is a perfect rival to the J300. It sports a liquid-cooled and fuel-injected engine, an optional anti-lock ABS braking system and ample storage. By ample I mean that you can fit two full-face helmets under the seat easily. The Forza is a slight bit heavy at 422 pounds, but it still gets a admirable 68 mpg. The Forza's seating position sees riders with their feet up front, rather than directly below -- similar to the CTX1300. At a price of $5,899 (CAN) the Honda Forza is set to do pretty well in the North American market. Especially because one of Honda's biggest competitors, Kawasaki, isn't offering a maxi scooter to the New World yet.

Generally in the world of motorcycles, when one company does something, so do all the rest. Honda has the CBR300, and Kawasaki has the Ninja 300. The pattern persists through most other models as well. In the maxi scooter segment however, Kawasaki is offering the J300 only in Europe. This seems like a mistake on Kawasaki's part since every day that the J300 isn't offered in North America, is a day that Honda is selling without one of its biggest competitors around.

The Kawasaki J300 is very similar to the Forza as far as specs go. It has a 299 cc displacement, and also uses a liquid-cooled single cylinder four stroke. engine. So really the only question is, "Why hasn't the J300 come to North America yet?" Does Kawasaki think it won't sell? Does it have something to do with production? When would we hear about plans to bring the scooter to North America if a big move were in the works?
